Lecture at the Yamamoto Gakko

Ambassador, H.E. Mr. Mohamed Mahmoud Ould Jaafar made a lecture at the Yamamoto Gakko on May 18, 2007. Yamamoto Gakko is organized by Mr. Masanobu Yamamoto in order to offer an opportunity to exchange opinions and study about many fields for many kinds of people with active spirits such as students, professors, business and educational related men and women. This time Ambassador was invited as a guest speaker and made a lecture about Mauritania. A lot of interesting opinions were exchaned after the lecture.

Inaugural ceremony of new President

Inaugural ceremony of newly selected President, Mr. Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi, was held on April 19n and he took the oath of office as the President of Mauritania. From Japan, Mr. Hamada Masayoshi, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs was present with many other Heads of States and representatives of international organisations.

Mauritanian New President was elected
Mr. Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi won at the second round of presidential election which was held on March 25, 2007. He received 53 percent of the vote against Mr. Ahmed Ould Dadda's 47 percent.

Special Seminar at Tsukuba University

The Special Seminar titles "Japan's Intellectual Partnership for the Stability and Development of North Africa: Issues and Perspectives" was organized by the Alliance for Research on North Africa of University of Tsukuba on March 20 at the campus' International Conference Room. Researchers of Tsukuba and invited speakers such as Professors of University of North Africa, guests from MOFA, MECSS, JBIC, JICA, H.E. Ambassadors of Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria made a speech. From the Embassy of Mauritania, Mr. Jarr Ould Inalla, Charge d'Affaires made a speech of bilateral relation between Japan and Mauritania.

Presidential election information
Presidential election was held on March 11, 2007 as a final stage to Democracy followed by the Military Council for Justice and Democracy founded after the coup d'etat in August 2005. 1,134,774 registered to vote, and 70.07% of them turned out to vote in the election. Mr. Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdellahi led among 19 candidates, but he could not have the majority, therefor the second round will be held on March 25 between Mr. Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdellahi and Mr. A£èmed Ould Daddah who was in second place.

Prime Ministre Koizumi tastes Mauritanian Tea

The African Fair was held in Odaiba from September 2 to 4. Prime Ministre Koizumi visited there on the first day and tasted Mauritanian traditional Mint Tea at the Mauritanian booth.

Japanese government visits Mauritania
A Japanese fovernement delegation led by Vice-Ministre for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Shintaro Ito visited Nouakchott on August 27, and had talks on enhancing bilateral cooperation.

S.M.C.P at the Sea Food Show
S.M.C.P. (Mauritanian Fish Trade Company) participated in the 8th Japan International Sea Food Show which was held from July 19 to 21 at Tokyo Big Sight, and introduced their famous octopus and squid for Japanese Market. Facing the Pacific Ocean, Mauritania is rich in marine resources, and exports them to the world market. Octopus is exported mainly to Japan and 40% of them comes from Mauritania to Japanese Market.
